As nose is located at the center of our face, its shape, angle and height affect the overall impression. Tall, straight nose often makes the face more dimensional and sophisticated while hooked nose with droopy nasal tip creates a strong, fierce impression.

Hooked nose has both congenital and acquired causes. Congenital factor is an over-development of bones and cartilage which creates a bump on the nasal bridge, but it could also happen due to the recovery process of accidents or injuries of the nose.

As mentioned above, hooked nose can lead to an excessive deviation or an over-development of nasal cartilage, causing diseases such as septal deviation or chronic sinusitis. Therefore, hooked nose surgery usually requires not only an aesthetic resolution, but also some functional corrections.

It involves an overall enhancement of the nasal slope, by correcting the cartilage and the protruding bone of the nasal bridge while raising the nasal tip which is projected downwards. In case of severe bone protrusion, osteotomy or humpectomy may be necessary so that the nasal width can become narrower. Moreover, coordination with an Otolaryngologist is suggested in order to straighten deviated septum and treat nasal diseases such as rhinitis and chronic sinusitis for functional improvements.

Dr. Kim Chae Min from Wonjin Plastic Surgery Hospital explains that “Aesthetic aspects such as the shape and height may be important, but rhinoplasty for hooked or deviated nose which requires both aesthetic and functional resolutions with coordination with an ENT specialist for satisfactory outcome.”
